The NEAR2 project is co-financed
by European Commission Directorate
General for Research & Innovation as
part of the 7th Framework Programme

The major outcome of the project will be the creation of a rail research network based on the experience gained within EURNEX, the European Rail Research Network of Excellence, along the Trans-Eurasian land bridge, engaging this way all the existing research centers in a continuous and fruitful international cooperation.

With the collaborating institutions and individual partners being leaders in their respective areas of railway research, the proposed Network will broaden and deepen our knowledge base and enhance our ability to bring critical interdisciplinary and multi-national insight to issues related to the railway industry. Through collaboration of interdisciplinary teams from various units, the network will produce more understanding of interrelationships on issues such as infrastructure and capacity availability, economics, regulations and international policies, business decisions, strategies and operations.

The Network will reinforce current collaboration and develop new initiatives drawing on the broad range of existing strengths and capabilities and matching them with the industry needs and desires. The Project will set a strong foundation for a sustainable network program with the aim to achieve international recognition as the leading network in railway research.

Another outcome by the industry representation will be based upon the results of a feedback process on research projects. Relevant topics for research projects will be introduced to the Advisory Board. Those topics that have a good chance for successful market uptake and are of mutual interest to stimulate joint research will be identified and developed further. According to the identified topics, recommendations for industries and researchers for personal exchange will be made. WP 5 will help support the integration process through the organization of an integration conference.

The Concept Documents that will be formulated will comprise a good basis for discussion, both in the framework of the project, but also beyond it, comprising the cornerstone for the bridging of gaps in knowledge and technology in order to improve the efficiency of the railways in the Trans Eurasian land bridge. Based on the previous WPs, identification and matching of potential collaborating research partners and facilities from participating partners will be performed. This will be achieved by using the individual Workshops to discuss and consider the strategy, policy and priorities for mutual interesting research topics and joint research projects. Identified research projects will be submitted to the Advisory Board for advice on methodology, priority and funding.
